Beginning in the midth century, North Carolina experienced population growth at a much higher rate than the national average.

As the land reaches westward from sea levelit rises gradually to the fall linea zone some 30 miles 50 km in width that separates the Coastal Plain from the Piedmont.

In the latter region, the topography becomes irregular, and the land rises about 5 feet 1. The mountains have a worn, rounded appearance, reflecting a geologic origin earlier than that of the rugged peaks of the American West. Mount Mitchellrising to 6, feet 2, metresis the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Composing nearly half the state, the Coastal Plain consists of a gently rolling, well-drained interior and a swampy tidewater area close to the coastline.

The latter region was the first to be explored and settled. A long chain of islands, the Outer Banksextends from Virginia to South Carolina, generally consisting of sand dunes that can reach feet 30 metres or more in height.

The elevation of the entire area averages less than 20 feet 6 metres above sea level. Only small-craft navigation is possible, because of silting and the shallow sounds and estuaries. The inner Coastal Plain extends to miles to km westward to the Piedmont, which is a region of rolling, forested hills.

The prominent ridges and hills of the eastern Piedmont may be the remains of an ancient mountain chain that paralleled the Appalachians, from which spurs extend into the western Piedmont. The area is well drained by rivers flowing into the Coastal Plain or South Carolina. Dams on the Catawba and Yadkin rivers are important sources of hydroelectric power.

The mountain region comprises a plateau broken by two ranges of the southern Appalachians. On the east are the Blue Ridge Mountainswhich rise steeply from the Piedmont to peaks of 3, to 4, feet to 1, metreswith several reaching above 6, feet 1, metres. This region is divided into several cross ridges and a number of smaller plateaus and basins.

Raleigh is the state's capital and Charlotte is its largest city. The Charlotte metropolitan areawith an estimated population of 2, inis the most populous metropolitan area in North Carolina, the 23rd-most populous in the United States, and the largest banking center in the nation after New York City.

North Carolina was established as a royal colony in and is one of the original Thirteen Colonies. In the run-up to the American Civil WarNorth Carolina declared its secession from the Union on May 20,becoming the last of eleven states to join the Confederate States.

Following the Civil War, the state was restored to the Union on June 25, North Carolina formerly used the slogan "First in Flight" on state license plates to commemorate this achievement. New plates use the slogan "First in Freedom" in reference to the Mecklenburg Declaration. North Carolina is defined by a wide range of elevations and landscapes.

From west to east, North Carolina's elevation descends from the Appalachian Mountains to the Piedmont and Atlantic coastal plain. Woodland-culture Native Americans were in the area around BCE; starting around CE, Mississippian-culture Indians created larger political units with stronger leadership and more stable, longer-term settlements.

During this time, important buildings were constructed as pyramidal, flat-topped buildings. Juan Pardo explored the area in —, establishing Fort San Juan in at the site of the Native American community of Joaraa Mississippian culture regional chiefdom in the western interior, near the present-day city of Morganton. The fort lasted only 18 months; the local inhabitants killed all but one of the men Pardo had stationed at a total of six forts in the area. After the grounding her crew and supplies were transferred to smaller ships.

In November, after appealing to the governor of North Carolina, who promised safe-haven and a pardon, Blackbeard was killed in an ambush by troops from Virginia.
